During that summer, my mother said, “If you think you’re sitting around all summer, you’re out of your mind. When I finally hit college, I explored theater and philosophy and did about a year and a half worth of credits in one year. Although my folks got me a typewriter when I was little and stuff like that, it was always, “Well, be a teacher or a secretary.”Īlthough I wrote all the time and read a lot, I was very involved in art and the arts in general. Being a good blue-collar kid, life as a writer was not on the radar for anybody. I wrote through school, then took kind of a left turn.
